What are electrical surges?

Surges are sudden and unexpected spikes in voltage that travel throughout your home’s electrical system.

Where do surges come from?

Some surges come from within your own home, such as turning on a vacuum cleaner or sending a document to your printer. The sudden demand on the electrical service inside your home creates a surge of electricity that increases the power going to outlets in your walls.

Other surges come from outside, as in electric utility switching, downed power poles, cut power lines and lightning strikes. There is little you can do to stop such events and your best recourse is to protect your home from the dangers of the exterior power surge.

Surges can even enter through cable televisions and telephone wiring. For example, if lightning strikes a Florida area home or somewhere around it, a surge may go through the electrical system and anything that is plugged in may get “zapped,” whether it is turned on or off.
